Platform support
| Platform | Status |
|---|---|
| Windows 10/11, x64 Intel or AMD PCs | Current portable build |
| Ubuntu and Linux Mint, x64 Intel or AMD PCs | Planned; Linux release and compatibility testing are pending |
Note. The setup instructions below apply to the Windows portable edition. Linux instructions will be published when a tested Linux package is ready.
What Drasill includes
- A desktop chat interface with streaming responses.
- An included AI model that starts automatically when you open the app.
- Local CPU inference; a dedicated graphics card is not required.
- Saved conversations and a local Markdown wiki.
- A model selector for switching between compatible models.
- Bundled application components, so you do not need to install Node.js, Python, or Electron separately.
Once you have the complete package, an internet connection is not required for local chat. There is no cloud account or API key to configure.
System requirements
For the Windows edition with the currently included small model:
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11 |
| Processor | x64 Intel or AMD CPU |
| Memory | 4 GB or more recommended; larger models require more memory |
| Storage | Space for the complete package, saved data, and temporary runtime extraction |
| Folder or USB drive | Must be writable to save chats and notes |
| Internet | Not required for local chat after obtaining the complete package |
| Dedicated GPU | Not required |
Response speed and model loading time depend on your processor, available memory, model size, and drive speed.
Get started on Windows
- Obtain the complete Drasill AI portable package. If it is supplied as an archive, extract it first.
- Keep the entire Drasill AI folder together. Place it on your computer or a writable USB drive.
- Double-click Drasill AI.exe.
- Wait for the included model to finish loading.
- Type a message and press Enter, or click the send button.
The application starts and manages its local AI server automatically.
Chat controls
| Action | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Send a message | Press Enter or click the send button |
| Add a new line | Press Shift + Enter |
| Start a new conversation | Click New Chat or press Ctrl + N |
| Reopen a conversation | Select it in the Chats sidebar |
| Delete a saved conversation | Hover over its sidebar entry and click its delete button |
| Stop a response | Click the stop button while a response is generating |
| Copy a code block | Hover over the code block and click Copy |
Use the local wiki
The local wiki lets you save conversations as Markdown notes and use a saved note as context for later messages.
- Open a conversation containing messages.
- Click Save .md beside Local Wiki.
- Select the saved note in the wiki list to use it as context for subsequent messages.
Notes stay on your device. Long notes may be shortened when added to a model's context.
Models
The current package configuration includes Llama 3.2 1B Instruct, in the Q3_K_L GGUF variant. The included model is selected automatically at startup.
Add another compatible model
- Obtain a GGUF model supported by the bundled inference runtime.
- Place its
.gguffile in the package's Models folder. - Choose it from the model dropdown and click Load.
The app detects model files added to Models while it is open. Model compatibility and memory requirements vary; a .gguf extension alone does not guarantee that a model will run.
Your files and backups
Keep this folder structure together:
Drasill AI/
Drasill AI.exe
Models/
Data/
Read Me.txt
In the packaged edition, Data stores your chat profile, preferences, and application logs. New wiki notes are stored in Data/Wiki. Packages with an existing Wiki folder continue to use that folder for notes.
To back up or move your portable setup, close Drasill and copy the complete folder, including Models, Data, and Wiki if present. Close the app before safely ejecting a USB drive.
These storage instructions describe the packaged portable edition. Development builds and older releases may use different profile locations.
Privacy and offline operation
Drasill processes chat requests locally using the model on your computer. Its inference server listens on 127.0.0.1, the local address used by applications on the same machine.
The current application has no built-in telemetry or automatic update checks. Clicking an external link in a response can open your browser; that browser activity is separate from local inference.
Saved chats and notes remain in local storage. Protect your device, USB drive, and backups as you would other personal files. Drasill does not provide a built-in encrypted vault.
The Windows portable executable temporarily extracts its runtime onto the host computer. Portable storage keeps your application data beside the app; it does not mean the host computer performs no temporary file activity.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| The included model is missing | Restore the complete package and its Models folder |
| A model takes a long time to load | Allow time for startup; loading speed depends on the model, memory, and drive |
| A newly added model does not load | Check runtime compatibility and available memory; retry with the included model |
| Chats or notes cannot be saved | Move the complete package to a writable folder or drive and check free space |
| The app stops working after files are moved | Close it and move the entire package together, then reopen it |
| Startup reports a local server or port error | Check whether another local AI server is already using port 8080 |
Planned Linux edition Not yet available
The planned Linux edition targets mainstream Ubuntu and Linux Mint desktops on x64 Intel or AMD computers.
The intended experience is the same desktop interface, automatic startup of an included model, offline CPU inference, and chats and notes stored beside the app. The packaging goal is to include the application components so recipients do not need to install extra application packages or use administrator access.
Linux packaging and testing are still pending. Supported distribution versions, launch steps, and USB compatibility will be confirmed before release. Depending on the system, Linux may require permission to run a downloaded application or restrict running programs directly from a USB drive.
No Linux release date has been announced.
